"I'm
particularly excited about this show as Aphrodite worked all summer
in preparation for this exhibit. She is unveiling all of these images
for the first time to the public! You'll fall in love with these
paintings as they depict the Caribbean from a classic point of view
that everyone can relate to."

exhibit,
"Oil Paintings in a New Light". These paintings are a
result of a summer of focused study and creativity. An enthused
Aphrodite is "very happy with these paintings. I enjoyed the
challenge of striving for progression in my artwork."
Since
establishing herself as a Caribbean artist in 1996, Aphrodite has
painted island scenes in a beautifully classic style often associated
with traditional oil painters. The work in this new exhibit comes
from her interest in opposing approaches to painting, Impressionism
and Realism. "Some paintings just needed to be created with
loose brushstrokes, while others kept moving in a direction to be
more and more detailed." explains Aphrodite. Other pieces in
the show are a result of her experimenting with a pattern of right-angled
brush strokes she refers to as "Blockism". Aphrodite explains,
"When you look at these paintings from a distance, you recognize
the area or scene. Upon closer viewing you really notice the detailed
vertical and horizontal brushstroke pattern I used to create the
painting." The result is a fantastic viewing of small and large
images depicting St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix with titles
such as "Secret Harbor Sunset", "Yesterday at Coral
Bay" and "Entrance to the Whim II."

Aphrodite
has loved to create art for as far back as she can remember. A career
in cosmetology allowed her to express herself creatively as a hair
designer. During those years she joined an arts association which
led to many workshops with prominent instructors from Maine to New
York. For many years, her work consisted primarily of portraiture
and sports art until a visit to the Caribbean evoked a new direction
for her artistic endeavors. Aphrodite and her work may be seen at
her gallery/studio at Tillett Art Gardens in St. Thomas. "Art
is an exciting endless learning process. Each new blank canvas intrigues
me. It's just waiting for it's own intended colorful image to one
day come alive in oils!"
