ST. THOMAS
Presents
“NEW WORKS”
Oil and Watercolor
BY ARTIST LUCINDA SCHUTT
Gallery St. Thomas presents
“New Works”, an exhibit of Lucinda Schutt’s
latest work in oil and watercolor. As with many artists in
the Virgin Islands, Lucinda is inspired by the natural beauty
that surrounds her, yet for her show “New Works”
she was particularly inspired by the beauty and simplicity
of everyday scenes; waves pounding the rocks, a school of
fish; a vase of flowers, shadows on a building. Creating the
time to paint can be a challenge for Lucinda, as she is more
often than not using her time to teach others how to paint.
For eight years she taught watercolor classes and painted
on site as resident artist at Caneel Bay Resort in St. John.
She also was the first resident artist for Robert Mondavi
Winery in Napa Valley California. Currently, Lucinda is the
resident artist for The Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas where she
teaches classes and paints on site. Her painting classes at
the Ritz Carlton will be featured in the May 2004 Caribbean
Travel and Life Magazine.
In September 2003, Claire Ochoa
purchased Blue Turtle Gallery from Lucinda and renamed it
Gallery St. Thomas. The gallery continues to prominently feature
Lucinda’s paintings and reproductions. Making the transition
from gallery owner to full-time artist has presented many
opportunities for Lucinda to focus on her artwork and not
only teach. While she continues to work and show at the Ritz
Carlton, she recently traveled to St. Croix for a watercolor
workshop with Mel Stabin. “I’m always looking
for ways to learn to paint differently. The workshop was a
real treat for me, as I am almost always teaching! It was
nice to be able to enjoy Stabin’s instruction, humor,
and be the student for a change.” “New Works”
also features paintings that were influenced by the painting
style of Impressionist Henri Matisse. “I looked to his
work to study color, shape and form for the pieces I created
in oil.” relates Lucinda.
Active in the local art scene,
Lucinda serves as secretary for the Board of The Virgin Islands
Council on the Arts (VICA). She will soon complete her mural
paintings in the children’s ward at Schneider Hospital,
and plans to teach disabled children to paint through a summer
program at UVI. While sharing her knowledge with art students
of all ages is one of her greatest passions, she is equally
pleased to present her own artwork for all to enjoy.
